Hobson’s Choice
Date: Wednesday 12th – Saturday 15th October 2022. 7.30pm start.
Location: Penrith Playhouse
Synopsis: A classic comedy from the cobbles (and cobblers) of Lancashire, a play of compassion and warmth in which curmudgeonly bootmaker Henry Hobson has his options famously restricted.
Penrith Players celebrate this famous tale of a self-made man, shopkeeper, skinflint and boozer, written by Harold Brighouse.
Henry Hobson is a tyrant to his daughters and a particularly stubborn man. When Maggie, his eldest daughter, stands up for her own rights and opposes Hobson’s wishes by intending to marry Will Mossop, who works as a boot-maker in the family shop, a battle of wills starts.
Ultimately, he stands to lose his customers, his daughters and his pride, it is Hobson’s choice after all.
