‘QUARTET’ by Ronald Harwood, is a comedy about four opera singers who end up in a retirement home for musicians in leafy Kent. It succeeds in being witty, scabrous, and poignant all at the same time. It is a great opportunity for older actors as the characters are all over 70.
There are two men and two women. Reggie, orderly and tense; Wilf, his friend, untidy, and prone to liven his day with sexual fantasies. Cecily, warm, naive, and with dementia. Lastly, Jean a true diva, who is haughty, and bitter about growing old, especially in a care home. The home holds an annual concert for Verdi’s birthday, when the residents perform for visitors.
It has been suggested that Jean join the others to reprise their greatest triumph, the quartet from Act 3 of Verdi’s Rigoletto. A can of worms is opened!
A casting evening will be held in the Penrith Players Bar on Tues January 15th at 7.30pm. Open to everyone interested in acting, stage managing, set and props, costumes, lighting and sound. We will read the play through during the evening.
